Beet pulp can be used to supplement fiber in a horses' diet. Horse owners can also use this product as a hay replacer or forage extender. Beet pulp is a very digestible product that can have higher energy levels than grass hay. Beet pulp also helps maintain water balance in hard working horses.
Is it necessary to soak beet pulp? As a horse eats (normally) it chews, grinding and breaking particles into smaller and smaller pieces. These particles make their way through a well lubricated digestive system until it is digested in the large intestine.
Beet pulp can be fed without soaking. Poulin Grain recommends that you soak the beet pulp under the following conditions: oYou are feeding large quantities (1 lb or more per feeding) to one horse
oYour horse has choked before
oYour horse is eating with other horses
oYour horse bolts or gulps down its feed or has scar tissue in its throat oYour horse is a poor drinker of water
oYou desire to get more water into you horse
oYour horse has limited access to clean, fresh water
oYour horse is colic prone
